Salix purpurea #187
To grow the finer canes suitable for basketry,
prune to the ground each season. The growth that
follows will be straight 2 m, deep green rods
without any lateral branches. Left unpruned, it
will quickly produce the heavier wood needed for
                                furniture as well.
According to Christopher Newsholme in the book
Willow: The Genus Salix, Salix purpurea is
bitter and unpalatable to livestock and rabbits.
