Salix irrorata - Bluestem or Sandbar Willow
                  
                              Fast growing. Particularly ornamental in fall 
                                and snowless winter climates, when the stems look 
                                a lavender color. Also effective in snowy climes 
                                when backdropped by evergreens. North American 
                                native.  Ornamental.
                              The picture with green leaves was taken on Oct 
                                21 and is of a group of plugs that was planted 
                                in the spring. The other picture shows the 2 year 
                                old plugs after having been coppiced in the spring.
                              Description: large shrub; up to 6 m (20'); 
                    upright and dense; new growth is reddish-brown, taking on 
                    a lavender/white bloom later in the season; leaves are glossy 
                    green and grey underneath
